Caspar Babypants has been a favorite in my family for four years now. We own all of his cds and they are steadily rotated throughout the rooms of each of my three daughters, where the music often eases them to sleep at night. We take music seriously in our house, particularly my husband, who has taken it upon himself to educate his children on the greats of the music world. This naturally includes the Beatles, whom our daughters have come to love. When I received a copy of ‘Baby Beatles!’ not too long ago, my husband was pretty excited. “How freaking awesome is this?!” he said, holding up to our kids. “It’s Caspar Babypants singing songs by the Beatles!”
If you’re like me, you’ll be skeptical about the concept of a cover album of Beatles songs until you press play. ‘Baby Beatles!’ is indeed pretty freaking awesome. With twenty tracks on the album, the songs are a great way to introduce the legendary music of one of the world’s greatest bands to your kids. The songs are simple and while they are covers, Caspar is able to put his creative touch on each song in his own unique way. The songs are pared down quite a bit from the originals in a way that makes the lyrics truly stand out. I won’t say he made them better, because hey, we’re talking about the Beatles. I’m saying he made them perfect for children in a way that won’t make you cringe at all – in fact, you’ll be singing right along with him. He also brings in some vocal help with Jen Wood (love her voice; she’s a great addition to several songs) as well as Rachel Flotard (love her, too!).
I’m a fan of the assortment of songs he chose to cover. To be honest, there were some I wasn’t familiar with, such as ‘Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite’ or ‘I’m Only Sleeping.’ There are the ones you would expect, like ‘Yellow Submarine’ and ‘Octopus’s Garden.’ Sadly, despite the clever title of this review, ‘Twist and Shout’ is not covered (perhaps another Baby Beatles! is in the works? There’s more than enough material, right?). After hearing ‘Baby Beatles!’ many, many times, I’ve decided my favorite is ‘Anytime At All,’ while the girls love ‘Yellow Submarine.’ In fact, as I write this, my almost three year-old is singing along and dancing next to me as it plays. Some of the more soothing songs are ‘I’m Only Sleeping’ and ‘Goodnight,’ which will have you yawning as you kiss your wee ones goodnight. There’s also ‘Penny Lane,’ ‘Here Comes the Sun,’ and All You Need is Love’ among other well known songs by the Beatles that you might expect to be covered.
‘Baby Beatles!’ is available on September 17. See the full track list at the Caspar Babypants website, www.babypantsmusic.com.
