With Memorial Day weekend comes the annual tradition of opening up the local splash parks! There are several wonderful spots on the Eastside to check out:
Address: 801 228th Ave SE, Sammamish, WA
Hidden in the valley behind Sammamish Commons Park is an isolated jewel of a play area. The splash park is tucked up against a small hillside orchard of trees and a brand new playground, with swings, slides, seesaws and sand. There is a loop of cement path good for roller skates, bikes, and chalk drawing. A covered picnic area adjacent to the playground (but opposite from the splash park) offers a few tables for eating. The effect of the isolation, valley, and farmhouse, all combine to give this play area the feel of a different time. In fact, if Laura Ingalls Wilder had a splash park near her little house on the prairie, it would look a lot like this.
Crossroads International Spray Park in Bellevue
Address: 16000 NE 10th Street, Bellevue, WA 98008
This is a fantastic spray park! The park has an ocean theme, with a giant orca whale and two baby whales, sea anemones, a sea serpent, and a ship wreck, among other fun spots. They all spray water and the kids just love it. The play area is right next to a giant field and a great playground, and it’s a fantastic spot for a playgroup. There is a new covered picnic area right next to the spray park, which is good, since there is very little shade. A good tip is to bring a beach umbrella along to plant in the grass next to the spray area so you can have a little shade and a home base. Park in the lot off 164th, with the driveway just off NE 10th St. (look for the “Crossroads Park” sign at the entrance right past 7-11).
Tukwila Aquatic Playground
Address: 12424 42nd Ave South, Tukwila, WA 98168
Located at the Tukwila Community Center, this aquatic playground is full of water fun. With sprays of water shooting up from the ground, fish spouts to aim, fountains to run through, and car wash style play areas, this park has been a hit since it opened last year. There are a few benches around the edges and some grassy space. Pack some treats and make it a playdate!
Grass Lawn Community Park and Splash Park in Redmond
Address: 7031 148 Ave NE, Redmond, WA 98052
This wonderful park was voted Best Park on the Eastside in the Ruby Slipper Guide Best of the Eastside contest, and for good reason. In addition to a park full of amazing playgrounds and sports fields, last year a new splash park opened up. Located in the east part of the massive park is a spray area perfect for toddlers, preschoolers and younger elementary schoolers. An area of about 10 feet square has spouts in the ground that spring up randomly, to the delight of the kiddos. The spray area is surrounded by a great little play area and grassy hills. It is a great place for a picnic and swimsuit fun. One tip: park in the lot on 148th Street rather than the lot on Old Redmond Road, otherwise you will have a bit of a hike to get to the spray area.
