Bowling is more fun in the dark. Well, at least no one can tell if you actually hit any pins. At Acme Bowl, there is bowling all day and Black Light bowling at night. They turn down the lights, turn up the top 40 music (alas, no New Kids on the Block for us Gen X-ers), pump in the fog, and let the balls fly. This is what newly minted teenagers live for. And if your kid is not yet a teenager, join them for an afternoon pin party. This place is smoke-free, pretty high-tech looking, and has onsite food. Bowling, bringing families together one gutter ball at a time.

This is one of those places that shows up regularly at the top of the local polls for favorite family destination for fun. Laser tag, rides, miniature golf, batting cages, bumper boats… this place is full of stuff to do. It has indoor stuff for rainy days, outdoor stuff for sunny days, it is great no matter what the weather. Be warned that it does get busy on the weekends, but if you can handle the crowds, this will fill an afternoon.

Rainforest Cafe
South Center 290 South Center Mall, Tukwila, WA 98188
Phone: (206) 248-8882
Website: http://www.rainforestcafe.com
Age: all
Cost: Varies

The Rainforest Café is really easy to get to- drive south on I-405 until you run into it- and to me, 405 is the Eastside. Plus, this place is so cool, it is worth bending the rules just a little bit. If you haven’t been here yet, this is one place you should take your family at least once. The food is pretty good, but a bit pricey, but that isn’t why you come here. The restaurant is full of life-sized animatronic animals found in the rainforest- elephants and gorillas, and a giant fish tank (the fish are real). The lights flicker like a rainstorm, and the sounds of the forest surround you. This is definitely worth the trip into the jungle.

Sykart Indoor Racing Center
17450 West Valley Hwy, Tukwila, WA  98188
Phone:  (425) 251-5060
Website:  http://sykart.com/
Age:  8 and up
Cost:  10 minute race- $16 non-members/$12 members

If you have a little NASCAR or Formula 1 driver in your house, take them to Sykart Indoor Racing Center.  Kids 8 and older are allowed to drive the course.  First they run the race at half speed to practice and demonstrate they are safe, then they can go full speed.  Races are 10 minutes long, then if you want to go again, you get back in line for the next race.  The crew at Sykart tries to keep younger kids separate from older drivers to help everyone stay safe.  This one sounds like a mini-speed demon’s dream!
