Sure, you can spend a lot of money going to your local cinema to sit through a movie that you hope doesn’t have anything indecent in it that will spark a rash of embarrassing questions later. But why bother, when you can go to the library and see great family films for free – flicks like ‘Meet Me in St. Louis’ or ‘Easter Parade.’ Your kids might fight you at first, but don’t be surprised when they admit later they actually like these movies. Matinees happen twice a month on Saturdays and start at 1 p.m. Check the website to see what’s playing. Children are welcome so long as they don’t disturb other moviegoers.

Youth Theater Northwest

Phone: (206) 232-4145
Website:  http://www.youththeatre.org/
Age: 3 and up
Cost: $13 per ticket, $15 opening night with gala

One of my favorite things is for kids to see other kids performing. This is one of those great examples of entertaining theater with kid performers. With musicals and plays aimed at younger audiences, you can check out shows like Seussical and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, for much less than a trip into the big city. Youth Theater Northwest also conducts classes, and as an added bonus, will help you host birthday parties- you come up with a theme like Fairies or Pirates, they will help create the fantasy! They will even conduct acting lessons at the party! Who knows? Maybe someday your child will be hearing, “And the Oscar goes to…”
